San Francisco Shakespeare Festival’s Free Shakespeare in the Park production of The Tempest. performs in McLaren Park’s Jerry Garcia Amphitheater Saturday and Sunday August 31 and September 1, and Labor Day Monday September 2 at 2pm. It continues on Saturday and Sunday September 7 and 8.
William Shakespeare’s The Tempest, is a dramatic play about a duke who uses magic to seek revenge and restore himself to power. Its themes are:
Illusion versus reality In The Tempest, Prospero’s use of magic and the mistaken identities of various characters emphasize the initial triumph of illusion over reality.
Human nature: Shakespeare calls into question what constitutes a human by juxtaposing humans with inhuman creatures. Through characters like Miranda, Shakespeare displays the goodness in humanity..

This summer’s musical version of As You Like It asks the questions “What does it mean to go ‘into the woods’ in our world today? What might it mean in the near future?” Just after Rosalind and Orlando meet and fall for each other, they’re both exiled from the autocratic Court to the Forest of Arden – with Rosalind in disguise as the boy Ganymede. Despite the challenges of life in the woods, they find new friends and allies and fall in love all over again. Our new musical adaptation features original music and lyrics by celebrated Bay Area composers The Kilbanes and Resident Artist Phil Wong.
Come early to get a good spot and learn more about As You Like It at our 15-minute Green Show. A Great Wreck-oning plays at 1 :30 on weekends only and provides a lively introduction to As You Like It that's fun for all ages!Bring your family, friends, a blanket, and a picnic to enjoy professional theater at no charge in a beautiful park setting!
